Want vs. Need: Why Your Wish List Matters More

Quick question. What gets your heart going: the things you need, or the things you want?

We all keep lists of what we need. Milk, batteries, the furnace filter we keep forgetting. Those lists are useful, but nobody gets excited about them. The wish list is different. That’s where we keep the camera we’ve been eyeing, the restaurant we keep meaning to try, the trip we’ll take someday, the perfect gift for someone we love. It’s a list we write with our heart as much as our head.

An old sales guy once told me (or maybe I told him) that it’s far easier to sell people something they want than to convince them they need it. That’s been true for about as long as people have been trading, which is a lot longer than social media has been around.

So here’s the plain truth: desire moves us more than need does.

That isn’t always a good thing. Plenty of trouble in history started with someone wanting what they couldn’t have, or shouldn’t. But desire has also given us some of the most beautiful things people have ever made. Great art, great poetry, great music, much of it was fueled by longing. Some of it is sad, some of it is tragic, and a lot of it is lovely, noble, even spiritual.

That’s the idea behind FotoList. Sure, it handles the everyday stuff. But it was really built for the things you want: the items, places, and moments you’re holding onto for yourself and the people you care about. Snap a photo, add it to a list, and share it with the people who should see it.

As the sign says, “I haven’t been everywhere, but it’s on my list.” Bring us your wish lists. We’ll help you keep them.
